Papers of the Webber family of Boston, Mass. and nearby towns include letters of Boston doctor Samuel G. Webber to his wife Nancy P. Sturtevant Webber describing his work as a naval surgeon aboard the ship Rhode Island during the Civil War; letters to Dr. Webber from his sister, Mary S. Webber, and his father, Aaron D. Webber; a short journal of a trip to the White Mountains of New Hampshire in 1837 by Maria G. Webber; two pocket diaries (1853 and 1854) of Lucretia Webber describing daily events in Needham and Boston, Mass.; and Samuel Gilbert's account of his life as a Boston printer and newspaper publisher, including his involvement in the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association. Additions to his account were made by his son, Benjamin R. Gilbert.

Samuel Gilbert Webber was born July 24, 1838 in Boston, Massachusetts, son of Aaron D. and Maria (Gilbert) Webber. He graduated from Harvard with a bachelor's degree in 1860. Webber joined the Union navy in 1862 as an assistant surgeon. He served on board the receiving ship Ohio (Sloop : 1820) in 1862 and then on Rhode Island (Sidewheel steamer : 1861) in December 1862.
